Abstract
This article is based upon the personal observations of Li yu-i who spent three and a half years in Tibet. This is an excellent and comprehensive study of the living Buddhas of Tibet and their position in Tibet in the past and in the 1940s. The contents are as follows: the history of the Buddhas; the ranks of the Living Buddhas; the organization of the Bla'brang'; the reincarnation of Living Buddhas and its recognition; the life of the Living Buddhas; and the Living Buddhas in relation to Tibetan society of the 1940s. This article analyzes their prestige in theocratic Tibet, and elucidates the powerful social and economic influence which they have over the common people.
