Abstract
Mrs. Bishop made two journeys into Korea between the years 1894 and 1897, the first expedition consisting of travel by sampan over the northern and southern branches of the Han River. According to the author, she is the first to report on the southern branch of the Han River and its environs. Her second trip consisted of a journey over the main roads from Seoul to Tokch'on. Because of the political situation she was forced to leave Korea for a period of time. Her account of traveling through parts of China, Mukden, Japan and Siberia have been omitted. An important chapter on Korean settlers in Siberia has been included because of the excellent coverage of material on colonization and acculturation. This work is one of the few accounts which is based on actual field work in Korea. It contains many pertinent observations and good objective reporting on such subjects as marriage, burial customs, demonism and shamanism, intimate portrayals of both the King and Queen of Korea with whom Mrs. Bishop had several audiences, and significant political changes which were occurring in Korea during her journeys.
