Land, inheritance, and economic mobility: an example from Bangladesh

Abstract
In this study, Harris examines partible inheritance and the factors that mitigate against the fragmentation of landholdings, such as sharecropping and buying and leasing land. He argues that sharecropping and leasing are means by which households owning too little land can increase their production and produce a surplus. Harris also compares his data to a 1922 British land survey and discovers some fluidity and mobility in Bangladesh society, which has been overlooked in the literature.
