Abstract
Henry, a social anthropologist, spent slightly over a year among the Xokleng (Aweikoma, Kaingang of Santa Catarina), and wrote this account of them almost entirely from his own field data. Data are included on the food quest, the kinship system, material culture, the life cycle, folklore and religion, and the daily routine. In addition, there are sections dealing with the disruptive forces in Caingang society (centering on feuds) and the integrative forces (centering on the extended family). Much of the book tends to be more in narrative style than the usual ethnography, and it is not always clear whether the conclusions refer to Caingang culture of the past or to the present decadent reservation-dwelling group.
