Continuity and change: Cottical society as a changing system

By: Köbben, A. J. F..

Abstract
This is a study of Ndyuka acculturation. Köbben first raises the methodological problem of determining a baseline with which to measure change, especially since infomant reports about the 'old days' may serve a rhetorical function and not be entirely accurate. He argues that a long history of resistance to white colonists has created strong cultural defenses against acculturation and that any signs of modernization among the Ndyuka are superficial at best. The areas he examines are missionary work, healthcare, and education.
