Perceptions of nature and the structure of society: the question of Cubeo descent

Dialectical Anthropology1 • Published In 1976 • Pages: 287-292

By: Goldman, Irving.

Abstract
This brief article discusses the Cubeo descent systems as part of the social structure of the Indian communities living in the Cuduiari and Vaupés regions of southeastern Colombia. According to Goldman the Cubeo social structure falls within the familiar segmentary pattern of four dependent divisions, which in descending order of magnitude are the tribe, phratry, patri-sib, and patri-lineage. The primary focus of this paper, however, is on the legendary origins and functions of the phratry and sib organizations in Cubeo society.
