Abstract
This is the published version of MS 5880 of the Imperial Library of Vienna. The original seventeenth century orthography has been preserved in the translation. The author was Auditor General and 'overseer of morals' under the Portuguese governor in Brazil in1662. The book contains several passages dealing with the Tupinamba living in Maranhao region as observed by Heriarte; these passages, sections 10-15 in the text, have been translated and reproduced for the files. Heriarte displays an extreme religious bias in his evaluation of Tupinamba culture, but his actual observations of specific objects and events are probably essentially correct.
