A structural analysis of Aweikoma symbolism

Ethnos31 (1-4) • Published In 1966 • Pages: 96-111

By: Hicks, David.

Abstract
In this article Hicks attempts to present an analysis of the cosmological system of the Aweikoma society through an examination of previously published ethnographies on these people, with particular emphasis on Jules Henry's monograph entitled "Jungle People " (1941). From an analysis of the contents of these documents, the author attempts to deduce a hitherto undetected scheme of symbolic classification, which he calls "complementary opposition" that could be used to provide a more intelligible meaning to certain Aweikoma beliefs and practices, and to show the existence of a principle of order that regulates the symbolism of the society.
