The measurement and meaning of stylistic diversity

Abstract
In this essay DeBoer and Moore look at stylistic diversity in ceramic rim design as applied by Shipibo-Conibo potters to their wares and how these designs function in an ethnographic context. The authors discuss the ways in which style can be measured for comparative purposes and how meaning can be attached to such comparisons. Since measurement alone is basically meaningless, the article begins by delineating the context in which measurement and meaning take form.
