Abstract
Following an ethnographic sketch of the Shipibo, Roe presents a sample of 11 mythological texts, dealing primarily with ethnic interactions, relations of the sexes, and major supernatural figures. These texts deal with myths of a serious nature as well as short humorous folktales. A brief history of the aboriginal and modern ethnic groups in the region is then presented showing how the Shipibo define themselves in terms of these groups, and also to show the historical correlates of ethnicity. A section then follows on the Shipibo puberty rites, the Ani Shrëati and Bëstëti Shrëati, in which girls of the tribe undergo radical clitoridectomy and hair cutting. The document concludes with a study of Shipibo cosmology, including data on shamanism, sorcery, and the spirit world.
