Blood feud and table manners: a neo-Hobbesian approach to Jivaroan warfare

Abstract
Irritated by the Jivaroan practice of spitting, even in the home of a friendly ethnographer, Boster contrives a neo-Hobbesian explanation for it. According to Boster, war, not peace, is the status quo among the Jivaro and that peaceful intentions are the exception rather than rule. Boster argues that spitting reveals peaceful intentions because one would not be able to copiously spit on the floor if filled with rage or fear and intent on murder. Such intentions would inhibit the salivary glands producing dry mouth and no spit
