Music, modernization, and westernization among the Macuma Shuar

By: Belzner, William.

Abstract
This is a study of Shuar music and culture change. Belzner discusses traditional Shuar music and instruments. He then examines the influence of western popular and religious music on Shuar music form and practice. Belzner finds that the Shuar have been able to keep the two traditions separate, i.e., no westernization and syncretism has occurred. For the Shuar, music is a means to gain power. Where western music worked to undermine Shuar independence and self-sufficiency, it was rejected and used only superficially in context of Shuar-White interactions.
