Abstract
This doument is the second part of a two volume work on the Maori, the first part of which is included for this field as (Best. vol. 1) This work begins where vol. 1 left off, starting with chapter 9, a continuation of social customs, and covering primarily the material culture of the Maori, in contrast to vol. 1 which dealt with social organization and the religious aspects of their life. Data covered in this source pertain to birth customs, sickness, death, burial and exhumation, games and pastimes, vocal and instrumental music, the dawn of science among the Maori, war, fortified villages, agriculture, fishing, forest lore and woodcraft, textile arts, personal adornment, and dwellings and storehouses. The author was a well-known specialist on Maori life.
