Abstract
This article examines the effort to revive and maintain the Rapa Nui language in conjunction with the revival of traditional culture spurred by tourism, beginning in the 1970s. The author notes the distinction between ideological purists associated with a rising ethnic political movement and those who are bilingual and work within the Chilean administration.
