Hawaiian adolescents and their families

Abstract
This is a chapter on adolescents from the 'Studies in a Hawaiian Community' (see documents nos. 7, 17-20, 22-27.) Boggs identifies two types of adolescents 'compliant' and 'non-compliant,' and examines a number of variables within the family and school, and among peers that might correlate with these types. The 'compliant' type is easy-going and willing to obey parents and teachers. 'Non-compliant' adolescents are less willing to obey adults and more inclined to be away from home and with their peers. Some of the variables Boggs examines are chore assignments at home, parental expectation and demands, disciplinary actions, and relations with friends. Parents do not have much control over what their children do outside the home. Compliance at home does not make them necessarily better students in school.
