Is there a Tongan middle class?: hierarchy and protest in contemporary Tonga

By: James, Kerry.

Abstract
In this article James argues against the presence of class consciousness and identity in Tonga. He focuses on a general strike by nurses in the nation's capital and argues that although having the appearance of acting on their class-based interests, the nurses were in fact acting on grounds of moral outrage in regard to nonfulfillment of government obligations. According to James there still is no middle class in Tonga, because professionals are still immersed in the ideology and relationships of a traditional hierarchical system.
