Abstract
This is a solid ethnography of Tonga village culture and household-based economy, which is a mix of subsistence and commodity production, although leaning more and more toward the latter. The author did fieldwork in villages in all three regions of Tonga. He discusses agriculture, fishing, and manufacture. He also discusses the kinship system and its relation to migration, land tenure, status, and exchanges among households.
