Abstract
This source presents a systematic survey of the history of the Tonga Islands, with a concentration on the period of 1770-1820. Emphasis was placed on this chronological period because the author considers it a particularly confused period of Tongan history 'in which a whole series of authorities were involved in a great number of political complications' (p. 505). Claessen attempts to unravel some of these complications and in the process throws new light on some of the rather nebulous political figures in Tongan history mentioned in other sources in this file, but whose actual roles were never made clear. At the time of writing Claessen was assistant professor at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology, State University of Leiden, The Netherlands.
