Abstract
This source contains detailed data on the Tongan agricultural system and the importance of cultivated and uncultivated plants in the Tongan economy. Much of the data are drawn from the author's fieldwork, which included mapping and surveying of agricultural plots; formal and informal interviewing, market surveys, and secondary research. The work includes: detailed discussions of agricultural practices; and exhaustive inventory of Tongan plant species; quantitative data on the relative importance of various plant species; maps of a number of individual agricultural plots; and a discussion of changes in the agricultural systems. An appendix at the back of the work (p. 377-431) contains an inventory of plant species and their multiple uses and data on agricultural species, food, drink, dyes, woodworking, and numerous other uses of plants.
