Holy war: Peter Dillon and the 1837 massacres in Tonga

Journal of Pacific history12 • Published In 1977 • Pages: 25-39

By: Cummins, H. G..

Abstract
This source is concerned with the validity of the charges of Peter Dillon, a trader-captain who visited Tonga in 1837, that the civil conflict of 1837 was instigated by the Wesleyan missionaries. The author traces the history and details of that conflict and concludes that Dillon's charges were 'very close to the truth' (p. 39).
