Drinking in the Polynesian kingdom of Tonga

Ethnohistory22 • Published In 1975 • Pages: 33-50

By: Urbanowicz, Charles Francis.

Abstract
The main theme of this source is that '… kava drinking has been the way in which Tongans have maintained their identity' (p. 34). With data based on first-hand observation and archival research, Urbanowicz describes the kava ceremonies of the past and the present to demonstrate his thesis. He claims that the 'Inasi ceremony has been replaced by the contemporary agricultural shows which are attended by the King. He concludes that it is the Taumafa kava ceremonies, those performed in the presence of the king, which most help 'to maintain Tongan culture to this day' (p. 46).
