Abstract
The purpose of this source is '... to examine the extent to which routine, everyday interpersonal relations within a low status group or class in a highly stratified society are in fact permeated by the same concerns with status differentiation or rank determination that characterize social relations between status groups or classes' (p. 34). Through observing commoners in the village of 'Uiha for 2+ months in th summer of 1972 during a project on the comparative study of law and conflict, the author concludes that the generalized 'concern for rank' is by no means pervasive (p. 64).
