Shifting cultivation and population growth in Tonga

Abstract
This source provides a discussion of the relationships between agricultural systems and population density. The author utilizes data from his fieldwork in three communities on Ha'apai and Tongatapu and presents information on fallow periods, crop systems, and soil fertility. He concludes that there has been some increase in agricultural intensity as a result of increasing population density, but suggests that population density is not the only important causal variable in agricultural change.
