Abstract
This source, by a missionary and educator among the Tongans, is a collection of stories, poems, and songs. Collocott's aim was '… to allow the Tongan to interpret himself through the mouths of his story-tellers and bards' (p. 3). Some of the subjects covered in the collection are stories about places, relations with Polutu, and various culture-heroes; poetry which reflects rivalry between poets, about death, about marriage, about wars, and about places; and various songs. Collocott's research method involved the use and collection of texts combined with interviewing for interpretations of the texts. Lengthy notes containing interpretive information are located apart from the body of the text on pages 129-167.
