Abstract
This document is an early account of traditional Samoan culture by a missionary who spent seven years in Samoa shortly before the middle of the last century, before many traditional beliefs and practices were discontinued. The author discusses the natural history of Samoa and describes the social, political, and religious customs of the Samoans. The author made it a point to collect information and record it while in Samoa. Later, these notes were supplemented by a Samoan chief who lived with the author in England. This document is valuable because it contains data which are impossible to obtain in Samoa at the present.
