Abstract
This document is a study of childhood and adolescence in the Manua Archipelago, Samoa. The author discusses Samoan personality development in the context of Samoan culture. The bulk of the material relates to the development of the girl and emphasis is placed on the adolescent period. Mead devotes considerable attention to sexual adjustment. Several case histories of Samoan girls appear in the text. These cases are all from three villages on the island of Tau, but additional material from other islands in Manua, and Samoa in general, is included. In a series of appendices the author comments on the methodology of her study. Appendix III is a cultural summary of contemporary Manua, including material on acculturation in all areas of life.
