Abstract
The major focus of interest in this monograph is on the effects of change on political leadership, ideologies and organization as a direct result of American administration since World War II. The cultural and social adaptations and consequences of this directed change thus form the bulk of this study. This change effect is brought out by the author in contrasting the traditional political and social organization of Yap with the present situation (i.e., under American administration). Unfortunately, in his presentation Lingenfelter frequently neglects to define clearly the political terminology he is using, resulting in a further muddying of the already complex political roles and relationships on Yap. For example the term 'chief' is often used without specification as to what political level is being discussed -- village chief, high chief, sectional chief, chief of young men, etc. This is also to be noted in discussions of 'paramount chiefs' and 'high chiefs' in which sometimes the terms apparently are used interchangeably and at other times are seemingly distinct entities. Other terms, some of native origin, although defined when first presented in the text, are used by the author in such a manner as to make the reader wonder if there were more than one meaning to the terms. Some of these are: 'estate,' 'estate associations'' 'SUWON' and 'YOGUM.'
