Abstract
This article examines the complexities of the problem of the relationship between Yap political organization and the nature and severity of the punishment for incest. As a part of his general thesis, the author, a professional anthropologist, attempts to show who in the society has the right to inflict punishment on an offender (in the case of the Yap, the patrilineage). The author presents a brief outline of Yap incest regulations and an analysis of the relationship between political structure (again with emphasis on the patrilineage) and punishment. The paper is based on the author's fieldwork undertaken in 1947-1948, supported by the Peabody Museum of Harvard University and the Pacific Science Board of the National Research Council.
