Abstract
This article examines relations between adoption and rank based on statistical comparison of adaptive patterns among four categories of people in Ifaluk, namely; chiefs, successors, salaried men and low-status men. It shows that adoption helps effectively match children and child care resources across these four categories of people. The author used this crucial function of adoption to explain why 'sucessor chiefs' produced more children than outgoing chiefs who otherwise enjoyed more control over critical material resources and extra time.
