Premarital freedom on Truk: theory and practice

American anthropologist51 • Published In 1949 • Pages: 615-620

By: Goodenough, Ward Hunt.

Abstract
Goodenough discusses the socio-psychological aspect of premarital freedom among the Chuukese in this document. Goodenough points out that the permissive attitude towards premarital sex, and the frank approach to sexual intercourse in general, do not necessarily reduce either the idealization of romantic love or the preoccupation with sex found so widespread among the young people of Chuuk. This article also illustrates the extreme duality of sexual attitudes towards sex in marriage as opposed to sex occurring in the usually extramarital 'sweetheart relationships.'
