Abstract
The theme of this study is competition in Belau, with an examination of its role in the traditional society, its function in controlling social and political stability, its manipulation by Belauan leaders for productive ends, and the manner in which it pervades various aspects of the culture and its people. The term competition generally does not refer to economic competition, but is used rather in the sense that hostility and agggression in the society are channeled to more productive ends. Some of the topics discussed in this source deal with the hierarchy of political competition, the village clubs as a focus of competitive behavior, and a historical survey including various aspects of competition in contemporary Belauan society
