Abstract
This source is a collection of ethnographic data compiled by a German official during the period when the Marshall Islands were under German administration. The author groups his information rather loosely under such headings as family relations, inheritance, political organization, judicial system, vengeance, property relations, and trade. No effort has been made to treat each topic systematically. Data on social organization are scattered throughout the article. Notes by the editor of the book in which the article appeared are either omitted or indicated by brackets in this translation.
