Abstract
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the islands of southern Lau were the center of the canoe industry for all Fiji, and Tonga as well. This work, combined with other highly-developed wood-working activities, necessitated the development of a number of cutting implements, made of both stone and shell. In this article, a number of these implements are described and pictured, and the techniques of their manufacture are discussed in detail.
