Social organization notes on the Northern Santa Cruz Islands: the Main Reef Islands

Baessler-Archiv; Beiträge zur VölkerkundeBerlin • Published In 1969 • Pages: 151-243

By: Davenport, William.

Abstract
This article by William Davenport presents a series of ethnographic notes on the inhabitants of the Reef Islands located in the northern Santa Cruz Island group. Of this cluster of small islands, the main emphasis is on the Main Reef Island group rather than the Outer Reef Islands of this chain. The latter will be discussed in a later publication by Davenport (see Davenport, 1972, document no. 12, in this file). Although social organization is emphasized, this work also contains information on geography of the Reef Islands, culture history, settlement patterns, men's associations, structures (both family dwellings and men's houses), concubinage, marriage (particularly in reference to bride price), kinship and kin groups, feasts, religion, maturation ceremonies, and many other features of Santa Cruz ethnography too numerous to list here.
