By: Davenport, William.

Abstract
In this article Davenport presents a descriptive ethnography of the people of the Duff Islands located in the northern Santa Cruz Island group. Although the author's particular emphasis in this work is on the socio-political organization of the islanders, especially in regard to the MATA or ward -- a grouping together of dwelling sites into named areas; the document does contain a wide variety of other ethnographic topics, such as settlement patterns, culture history, mythology, canoes and canoe construction, property and inheritance, kinship, trade, childhood and puberty rituals, marriage, reproduction, and the men's associations.
