Abstract
This work examines the kula ring and cultural relationships in the Northern Massim region (northern maritime Milne Bay province), New Guinea—specifically on Muyuw (Woodlark) and the Trobriand islands. An attempt is made to explain these relationships "…by using the relational perspective common to structuralism and world-system theory" (p. xi). As part of the analysis, a general ethnography of the region is provided. Specific information is given for: calendric transformations and social discontinuity; native concepts of time and value; Muyuw culture history; social relations and social order on Muyuw; and a comparison of Muyuw-Trobriand political, social, and cultural forms.
