Territory, hierarchy and kinship in Kiriwina

Abstract
In a previous article on Kiriwinan kinship (54: Powell) the author argued the relevance of a distinction between ontogenetic and phylogenetic dimensions of kinship relations. Based on this distinction Powell criticizes the interpretation of Trobriand kinship and marriage made by both Lounsbury (1965) and Leach (1958) and presents in this work his own model of the system. This model combines elements of both the ontogenetic and phylogenetic dimensions and attempts to define kinship in terms of social interaction, taking over in the process kinship terminology to designate an etiologically distinct set of institutionalized behavior.
