Trobriand kinship from another view: the reproductive power of women and men

Abstract
This paper focuses on the brother-sister sibling set as the primary unit of analysis. Weiner, who views reproduction as a model for the organization of a society, analyzes both men and women's roles as reproductive agents. She then examines the processes of reproduction '…as they relate to the reproduction of DALA, the reproduction of human beings, and the regeneration of social relations' (p. 328). With this model of reproduction in place Weiner analyzes Trobriand kinship terminology and the problem of the meaning of the kinship term TABU. Much of the material in this document is a critical evaluation of the earlier works of Malinowski, Leach, Lounsbury, and others.
