Abstract
The focus of this study is on the life and work of the western Aranda artist Albert Namatjira. In contrast to documents 42-45 in this file that also contain biographical information on Namatjira, this study stresses the early years (ca. 1930s) of Namatjira's training as an artist under the tutelage of Rex Battarbee, a renowned Victorian watercolorist. The essay emphasizes the close relationship between the two men and the various influences that affected Namatjira's work. In agreement with Jones (see 45: Jones in this file), Albert Namatjira is represented as a self-motivated individual whose ambition and pragmatism were major factors in helping him find success.
