Notes on the Arranda tribe

Abstract
This article contains short discussions of Aranda ideas of birth and the after-life, and on marriage and section systems. The focus is on the southern branch of the Aranda. Mathews concludes that the Aranda, as well as several other Australian 'tribes,' have matrilineal descent and not patrilineal as Spencer and Gillen and others state. Mathews did not visit the Aranda, but corresponded with people living in the area who made the actual observations. Mathews' lack of personal observation coupled with the fact that his conclusions are different from those of others who observed the Aranda first-hand, suggest that his data and conclusions are somewhat suspect.
