Abstract
Shamans have traditionally dominated Piman (Pima and Papago) intellectual life both as the principal heroic type celebrated in popular song and poetry and as the main source for critical reflection on social issues (p. 193). This article, based in large part on information obtained from the Papago shaman Juan Gregorio, discusses theories of disease, the role of the shaman in Piman society, their methods of diagnosis and curing , and the relationship between the shaman and the non-shamanistic curers in the society.
