Abstract
This source contains both descriptive and analytical data on settlement and land use patterns in the Utah Valley. Part of the document is devoted to a historical account of settlement and subsequent development of the valley. The bulk of the study, however, is concerned with maps and descriptions of land use within the settlements as of the 1950s. For the purpose of analysis, the author categorizes land use as residential, commercial, industrial, public, agricultural, and vacant. Contrary to popular belief, it is concluded that Mormon settlement patterns are not unique when compared to others in the United States.

Notes
by Robert L. Layton
Most of the information on land use patterns within communities has been marked for one of the 36 categories rather than for 311. General information on settlement growth and the settlement hierarchy will be found in Category 361. Most of the photographs contained in the original study were not reproduced distinctly. They have not, therefore, been categorized, but may be found in the text, Category 116.
