Abstract
This doctoral thesis presents the usual historical, social and economic background material in its introductory passages. The main body of the text which follows is an analysis of Western Apache beliefs about supernatural power, focusing on the ways in which, manifested in the form of sacred songs, it can be acquired, used and passed on. After considering how and on what occasions songs are used to invoke supernatural power, Variakojis discusses secular uses of music.
