Abstract
This source examines factors affecting agricultural production in the Navajo community of Shonto. After a general historical and economic summary and a review of previous literature on Navajo agriculture the author discusses agricultural field types, environmental factors affecting production, lowland-upland and field type differences, economic and demographic factors affecting production. Four lengthy Appendixes present data on accuracy of informant economic data; demographic, social, and economic characteristics of camps; additional soil data; and returns per work-hour for animal husbandry and agriculture. The conclusions are that many factors affect agricultural production and that 'agriculture holds an important and central position…as one of…multiple economic dependencies' (p. 335).
