Abstract

This chapter, written by a Navajo educator, provides an overview and history of the Navajo educational system. The author is often critical of BIA, mission, and reservation public schools, largely because of outside influence in educational programs. Alternatively, she cites community-controlled contract schools as a boost for Navajo education. History, curricula, enrollment, and funding are covered for each of the parallel school systems as well as educational legislation. Also addressed is the increasing availability of college opportunities and funding.
