Abstract
This is a brief source, written by a government archaeologist, on the general prehistory and history of the Navajo to 1850. Only highlights are touched on, including the history of the Spanish-Navajo contacts and the assimilation of refugee tribal elements by the Navajo. Also covered are the antecedents to modern Navajo culture. More useful than the text is the excellent section on the synonmy of Navajo autodenominations and names applied by other groups, an extensive bibliography, and a list of Navajo collections in U.S. museums. The bibliography, which covers all cultures detailed in Volume 10, is supplemented by a smaller annotated section on Navajo sources.
