New Mexico historical review21 • Published In 1946 • Pages: 1-21

By: Reeve, Frank Driver.

Abstract
This is a detailed account of the struggle of the Navajo between 1877-1887 to gain access to the San Juan River by retaining control of a small strip of land along the south bank. Long and involved litigation with and depredations against Euro-American settlers finally ended with governmental ruling joining the land to the reservation. The author points out, however, that 'this struggle is an episode in the history of the land problem that still plagues the Navajo and the government of the United States.
