Abstract
In this paper, the authors present materials that bear upon methodological issues in the study of primitive children. Taking two Navajo children of the Ramah area for whom case histories up to 1942 were given in 'Children of the People' (see 2: Leighton, category 155 or 159), Dr. Kluckhohn and Mrs. Rosenzweig here deal with the period from 1942-1947. After giving personality profiles based both on observation and personality tests, they discuss problems arising out of those tests. A Rorschach, modified Thematic Apperception Test, Stewart Emotional Response Test, and Bavelas Moral Ideology were given to the two subjects in 1942. After ten months, these were repeated by different field workers and the results compared. In 1946, the subjects were put through a battery of projective experiments devised by Rosenzweig to bring out group attitudes and determine their place in the total personality configuration of the individual. About a year later, Rorschachs were once again administered to the children. Although much of the work by the different testers was done independently, the picture obtained of these two personalities is remarkably consistent. Clyde Kluckhohn is an ethnologist who has worked with the Ramah Navajo for many years, and Janine Chappat Rosenzweig is a psychologist who has also been associated with the Ramah Project. For a brief description of the Ramah Project, see the abstract for 5: Leighton.
