American naturalist18 • Published In 1884 • Pages: 113-133

By: Dorsey, James Owen.

Abstract
This is a general descriptive account of the ceremonies connected with the genesis, organization, and ceremonies of Osage war parties. Three types of war parties are distinguished: the large party, undertaken in the summer; the sacred bag party, in which only a few engage at any season; and expeditions after the horses and other property of the enemy. The ceremonies connected with the large party are thoroughly described, and those of the other types are described with reference to the first. The manner in which the Osage moiety and gens organization interpenetrates with other aspects of the ceremonies is shown throughout.
