Abstract
The major part of this source contains a history of the Fox and Sauk from the 17th to 19th centuries and speculations about their origins. Rebok, the Indian agent for the Fox at Tama, Iowa, consulted memoirs, letters, and state historical collections to develop a history of the Fox and Sauk, their relations with other Indians, the French and English, and later, American settlers. He deals at length with the Sauk and Fox Confederacy. He also provides detailed accounts of their movements from one settlement to another. He briefly discusses customs and religion, including descriptions of houses, diet, clothing, marriage and divorce, funerals, and religious beliefs. He also provides sketches of two Fox chiefs, Push-e-to-neke-qua and Ma-tau-e-qua. The end of the report is an account of the first Indian Congress of 1898, which the Fox attended along with Indians from all over the country. While it was sponsored by the government, it was one of the earliest meetings of the pan-Indian movement.
